How to create iMessage stickers from your own photos

Adding a sticker to a text message is a lively way to express a certain thought or feeling. But the generic stickers that come with iOS and iPadOS can be impersonal. Wouldn't it be cool if you could create stickers from your own photos? Now you can.

Using a new option in iOS 17/iPadOS 17, you're able to generate a sticker from any person, animal, place, or thing appearing in one of your photos. You can even fashion an animated sticker from a live photo and add special effects to any sticker. Here's how this works.

What is RCS and how is it different from SMS and iMessage?

In a dramatic reversal, Apple announced this week it would offer RCS support starting in 2024. The decision effectively ends one of the most protracted and confusing conflicts between iOS and Android. If you’re not sure what any of that means, don't worry: We're about to lay out what could change with Apple’s adoption of the GSMA’s next-generation messaging protocol.

How Apple put Snoopy into its New Watch Faces

When the Apple Watch first launched back in 2015, there were 10 Watch faces. Now, there are more than 50. The newest among these is the Snoopy Watch face, designed in conjunction with the Charles Schulz Studio.

The Independent sat down to talk to Gary Butcher, human interface designer at Apple, Eric Charles from Apple Watch product marketing and Paige Braddock, chief creative officer at Charles M Schulz Creative Associates to discover everything about the new Watch face.

The new Apple Watch Double Tap gesture is useful, sometimes

The new Double Tap gesture is the hero feature of the Apple Watch Series 9, allowing users to control their watch ‘hands-free’ without needing to touch the screen. Apple is certainly pushing the feature aggressively with a new series of ads running on social media this week.

Before getting the new watch, it was hard to tell whether Double Tap would be a genuinely convenient gesture, or a rarely-used gimmick once the novelty wears off. A month in, I think the truth is somewhere in the middle …

7 best ways to use your iPhone's awesome Visual Look Up feature

If you've not heard of Visual Look Up — perhaps because you're new to iPhones or have just missed the feature — you're in for a treat.

Visual Look Up is Apple's version of Google Lens, built right into your iPhone. What that means is it can intelligently scan your photos and videos to detect subjects and look them up for you online. Essentially, if you're looking at something and thinking "what is that?", Visual Look Up is there to tell you.

However, this feature doesn't just use its subject detection to search for things online. Once Visual Look Up has detected a subject, it'll even allow you to lift that subject out of an image and use it in other applications.

From Health and Security to Travel, These 50 Smartphone Features Can Make Your Life Easier

Among all the hours you spend on your smartphone every day, precious few involve making or receiving calls.

Instead, what makes a smartphone smart is all the other tasks it’s capable of: helping keep you or loved ones safe in an emergency, providing directions even when you’re offline or reminding you where you parked your car. More than 6 of every 7 adults 50 and older own some type of smartphone, according to an AARP Research report released this year.

Notes Are Not Syncing Between iPhone, iPad and Mac

The Notes app stores your thoughts, and all of your notes can be kept in sync across your devices. This means that thanks to iCloud, your notes remain current across all your devices, no matter where you are or which Apple device you are using. Some users are complaining that Notes are not syncing and new notes, folders or changes to the old ones do not appear on other devices.

Apple’s ‘Scary Fast’ Was a Fun Non-Event

Last night, Apple held what was perhaps one of the most unusual events in the company’s storied history. While the topic of the event was typical for October — new Macs — the presentation and format had an unusually whimsical spin.

Firstly, the evening timing was unprecedented for an Apple event. Most Apple events start in the morning in Cupertino at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, putting them at a comfortable 1:00 p.m. on the East Coast. Occasionally, Apple will have later start times when hosting events in other locations, such as some of the education-focused events held in Chicago and New York City over the years. Still, those have always been the exceptions, and Apple product announcements coming from Cupertino usually keep to a pretty predictable schedule.

This Apple Watch feature will save you from hearing damage — enable it now

While it may sound like hyperbole to say that an Apple Watch feature could save your hearing, it isn't. Most of us are regularly exposed to loud sounds which can easily damage our ears, causing hearing loss and/or tinnitus.

The real danger is not the odd loud bang of a firework or something dropping off a truck, as these are very short-lived occurrences. In most of our day-to-day lives, proper damage is done by sustained loud noise — things like listening to music too loud, riding a motorcycle or using power tools. Anything above 80 decibels (dB), according to the CDC, is going to start causing hearing damage with prolonged exposure.

The Guide to iPad Gestures

Gestures are a great way to become an iPad power user. Gestures help you easily navigate through apps, switch between pages, access controls, and reduce multiple taps to a single swipe. Gestures are especially useful for Stage Manager, the new multitasking environment on iPad.

Apple designed gestures to mimic natural, real-world movements, making them intuitive to use and learn. Swiping, pinching, tapping, and other gestures feel familiar and are easy to master.

If you use your iPad a lot, they’re well worth learning — even just a few. Your fingers will thank you!

You can soon sign into Amazon using FaceID — just in time for Black Friday

Amazon is finally letting you use Apple passkeys alongside TouchID and FaceID to sign into your account, just before the Black Friday sales begin on November 23.

According to a news post from Amazon, the shopping site is slowly rolling out these features over the next few weeks on its iOS app, saving you the hassle of typing in your password.

While you could previously autofill your password from iCloud Keychain, which stores all of your passwords behind FaceID or TouchID, there's been no other way of signing in to your Amazon account other than manually typing it all out.

iOS 17 has brought the ability to trigger cool augmented reality (AR) effects with hand gestures during video calls on FaceTime and in compatible videos apps such as Skype. For example, you can raise one thumb to trigger the Like animation.

Conversely, a thumb-down will play the Dislike reaction. And with two thumbs up, the Fireworks effect will play directly into your camera feed.

The Wi-Fi, 64GB model of the ninth-generation Apple iPad is currently available from Amazon for just $249, which is the tablet’s lowest-ever price at Amazon and the same price it was during October Prime Day.
